How ironic that my first real post on this blog devoted to saving money and do-gooding be inspired by the recent theft of my beloved bike, which was locked up on a busy street when stolen. With practice and deep breathing I’ve learned to take these things in stride; this was the fourth … yes FOURTH … bike I’ve had heartlessly stolen from me in the three years I’ve lived in DC. In spite of the drawbacks (including but not limited to: car doors opening on me, the need for regular tune-ups and part replacement, theft, flat tires, being cussed at, and of course the challenge of riding in skirts and high heels), I would never get around any other way. Rain or shine, my bike ride to work is one of my favorite parts of the day.

After this most recent theft, I’ve decided I need to get serious and be more careful with my bike! Foremost, I am going to invest in a Kryptonite lock ($50, give or take) and cable. I am also going to take my bike inside my destination whenever possible. This idea might sound strange and imposing, but you’d be surprised how accommodating people are in this city. And lastly, if I’m really nervous, I am going to remove my front tire and lock it up with everything else. This part I’m a little skeptical about because I see myself not being able to put it back on, but I guess I’ll practice in the privacy of my own home before performing this stunt in public.

So with the financial loss of 4 stolen bikes plus locks etc., why, you might ask, would I keep riding? As I said I wouldn’t do it any other way. Even the more than $1,000 I’ve now shelled out for bikes and bike parts I no longer have does not compare to the money I would be spending on a car – gas, insurance, tickets, etc. A bike is quick, fun, and efficient (as a friend once said, “infinity miles per gallon”). I get to breathe fresh air and bike through the seasons. I never wait for the train or bus, or search for parking. And very best of all, a bike is a friend to Mother Earth. (Especially if you get a bike second hand, which I personally prefer.)

I got my new bike from a very cool local, green business – Bulldog Bike Restoration. Out of his Va. home, Joe repairs, restores and customizes secondhand bikes. The site is updated daily (at least) with photos of available bikes, parts used, etc., and Joe will meet you at a Metro stop to check out a bike you have your eye on. Be warned, however, the bikes go quick so if you see one you like, get on it! Picture of my new bike below. Happy riding! And if you know of any other tricks to avoid bike theft, please share!
